Project Story

Michael Renau

VP Sales & Marketing

Expanding the Cloud Offering Responding to Market Needs

Renau Corporation has been designing and manufacturing control systems, temperature-monitoring solutions, and technologies supporting professional kitchens for years. Its devices are used by major restaurant chains and equipment manufacturers.
However, the market was increasingly demanding more than hardware alone. Customers wanted remote access, centralized device management, and the ability to manage multiple locations from a single interface.
Developing its own IoT platform therefore became a natural next step in expanding Renau’s offering.

3 Months Before the Trade Show

Three Months to Take Over the Project Working Under Time Pressure

Our collaboration began at a particularly intense moment. Renau was preparing for an important trade show presentation, while its previous approach to building the platform had not produced a solution that could be confidently presented and developed further.
The deadline was almost impossible to meet. There was no time for a conventional, linear development process, so we reorganized our workflow: we gathered requirements, designed the cloud architecture, reviewed previous decisions, and implemented the first features in parallel.
This approach required a high degree of trust on both sides, as well as fast decision-making based on incomplete information.

2021

First Presentation and Continued Development From the Trade Show to a Full-Fledged Product

In less than three months, we developed a working version of Renau Cloud that was presented at the trade show. However, it was not intended as a one-off demonstration, but as the foundation for a product that would continue to evolve over the years.
After the event, we continued expanding the platform together with the Renau team. Subsequent iterations addressed the needs of real users, new devices, and the first commercial deployments.
This initial success paved the way for a long-term partnership and the development of a solution that would eventually become a key part of Renau’s offering.

2022

First Commercial Deployments Bringing the Product to Customers

In the next stages, Renau Cloud began to be deployed for its first commercial customers. The platform moved beyond its original demonstration role and became part of Renau’s actual product offering.
Customers gained the ability to remotely monitor devices, manage their configurations, and oversee multiple locations from a single interface. The IoT platform complemented Renau’s physical devices with the digital capabilities the market was increasingly demanding.

2024

More Than 400 Locations Served Network-Wide Management

Over time, the platform expanded to more than 400 restaurants and other facilities across the United States. As the scale increased, we continued developing the system to support additional devices, customers, and use cases.
For large restaurant chains, this means that changes can be managed centrally across hundreds of locations. Configuration updates that would previously have required the involvement of multiple people can now be carried out from a single interface.

Industry Recognition NAFEM Kitchen Innovations Award

In 2025, the Renau solution received the NAFEM Kitchen Innovations Award—an award recognizing innovations in the professional foodservice industry.
The award validated the direction we had been developing together over the years: combining Renau devices with a platform that makes them easier to manage and improves operators’ day-to-day work.

2026

A Product Evolving Over the Years Ongoing Maintenance and Continuous Iteration

Renau Cloud has been running continuously in production and is regularly enhanced. We have already completed more than eight major iterations introducing new features, devices, and solutions tailored to the needs of new customers.
New solutions are developed and tested outside the live production environment before being released to users. This allows us to continue improving the platform without disrupting the day-to-day operations of Renau’s customers.
What began as an urgent trade show project has evolved into a long-term partnership between two teams that share responsibility for the product’s continued development.

Scaling

We've added new modules to the app, optimized its performance, and prepared it to handle a larger number of users.

Challenge

Location monitoring was available only locally

Renau had operational devices and firmware, but lacked a central platform that would enable:

  • a global overview of the device fleet,
  • remote real-time monitoring of parameters,
  • rapid response to failures and anomalies,
  • secure system scaling as the number of sensors grows.

Previous on-premises solutions did not allow for the expansion of the service offering or the effective management of devices across multiple locations.

Solution

We have created a scalable IoT platform that has become the central hub for managing the entire Renau device ecosystem.

Features and Functionality

SaaS Product

The IoT platform we built is continuously developed and offered as a SaaS product. Renau sells access to the system to its business customers, who use it to manage their own device fleets across multiple locations. The system uses a multi-tenant architecture, ensuring that each company has isolated data, its own users, and independent configurations. The platform supports different access plans, allowing functionality to be enabled or restricted depending on the scope of the agreement and the user’s role. This approach enables Renau to scale its commercial offering without requiring architectural changes to the system.

Real-Time Device Monitoring

The platform provides real-time monitoring of thousands of IoT devices operating in the field. Data such as temperature, operating status, signal strength, and battery level are collected and displayed in real time. With a centralized overview, operators and end customers can quickly identify issues and respond before a failure occurs. Monitoring covers individual devices as well as device groups and entire locations.

Alerts and Incident Response

The system includes automated alerts that notify users when predefined thresholds are exceeded or when devices exhibit unusual behavior. Notifications can be sent in real time via email, SMS, and other channels. This allows Renau’s customers to respond immediately without having to continuously monitor the system manually. In industries where downtime causes real financial losses, this preventive approach significantly reduces risk.

Organizational Structures and Access Management

The platform supports complex organizational structures, including multiple companies, locations, teams, and devices within a single system. Each user is assigned a specific role and set of permissions, enabling precise control over access to data and functionality. This allows the system to be used securely by technical administrators, operations managers, and service teams alike.

Scalable Cloud Architecture

The solution is based on a cloud architecture that scales automatically as the number of devices and the volume of data increase. The system can handle millions of messages per day without generating excessive infrastructure costs. This approach ensures stable platform performance both during pilot deployments and at full production scale.

Data Security and System Stability

The platform provides advanced security mechanisms, including user access control, data isolation between companies, and cloud infrastructure safeguards. The system is continuously monitored and updated to meet production-grade security requirements.Stable and predictable system operation is critical for Renau customers who rely on the platform as part of their day-to-day operational processes.

Intuitive User Interface

The platform’s interface was designed in collaboration with the Renau team, taking into account real-world workflows of end users. Dashboard views are clear and easy to navigate, with the most important information accessible without having to click through multiple screens. As a result, the system is used as an everyday operational tool rather than merely as a reporting solution.

How We Built Trust

1.

Experience and Pragmatism

With tight time and budget constraints in mind, we focused from the outset on solutions that would allow us to achieve the key business objective without unnecessarily complicating the project. Our experience delivering IoT solutions and web applications allowed us to quickly assess the risks and base the project on proven technologies and approaches.

2.

Initiative and Ownership

The project started without a complete functional specification. We stepped into the role of a partner who not only delivers the agreed work, but also helps structure priorities, proposes directions for further development, and actively looks for ways to improve the product.

3.

Effective Communication

We assigned an experienced, well-aligned team to the project. Streamlined decision-making, continuous communication, and rapid responses to change allowed us to maintain a fast pace despite a highly demanding schedule.

The First Step Was a Conversation

At the beginning, there was no complete specification or ready-made implementation plan. There was a specific problem, time pressure, and a need to find the right direction.

That conversation marked the beginning of a collaboration that continues to this day.
